  1. a Bachelor's degree obtained with at least Second Class Honours in an area of study deemed suitable by the Board or
  2. a degree from this or another university which the Board considers as comparable to the degree indicated in paragraph (a).

Applicants may be required to provide evidence of being in possession of the licence to practice in the register of the profession concerned, as kept by the relevant regulatory council.

Applicants may be required to provide evidence of work experience following registration with the relevant regulatory council in the proposed area of study or area of specialisation, if applicable. The minimum number of years of experience required shall be indicated at the time of the call for applications.

During the first year of the Course, accepted students may be required to undergo an occupational health assessment so as to ascertain that they are fit for the duties related to their proposed studies. Students who do not fulfil this requirement may be barred from progressing with their studies. Failure to disclose information about a physical or mental health problem that could affect patient safety is considered to be a serious breach of the University Suitability to Practise Regulations.

If you are a qualified nurse who holds a Level 6 qualification (or an equivalent qualification based on an RPL exercise) the Master of Science in Nursing (Perioperative Care) is designed to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of perioperative nursing and its role in enhancing patient outcomes throughout the surgical pathway. This programme addresses advances in healthcare delivery and covers a holistic overview of several key areas, with the principles of preoperative assessment, intraoperative care, and postoperative management. Key areas include patient safety, anaesthesia, resuscitation, managing surgical complications, and the integration of evidence-based practices into care delivery. Equally important, you will explore leadership, teamwork, communication, and quality improvement strategies tailored to the perioperative context. The programme includes practice-based challenges and opportunities for reflective practice, equipping you to address challenges and innovate in this rapidly evolving specialty.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards 2021, and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Master of Science - M.Sc. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Health Sciences.

By the end of the programme, you will be able to:

  • Critically evaluate contemporary evidence and integrate it into patient-centred perioperative care strategies.
  • Gain expertise in addressing the unique challenges of the perioperative period, including patient safety, anaesthesia, and surgical complications.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking and reflective skills to assess and improve perioperative practices.
  • Lead, or advocate for, quality improvement initiatives that enhance patient outcomes across surgical settings.

  • Enhance communication and teamwork skills to enhance patient outcomes and professional collaboration.
  • Cultivate leadership abilities to manage teams, manage change, implement safety protocols, and influence clinical decision-making in perioperative care.
  • Engage in continuous professional self-assessment and lifelong learning to maintain clinical excellence.
  • Advocate for the role of specialist nurses and advanced practitioners in perioperative care, and create opportunities for learning.
